RESIDENCY IN UAE

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, if you are earning money or promoting anything. In the UAE, being a creator or media professional is a regulated commercial activity. You need a legal business structure, and that can be either a freelance permit or a company.

It depends on your operation. For a creator, freelancer, production house, or small agency, a media free zone is usually the starting point. Mainland is mostly used if your revenue will come directly from UAE entities or from physical work you deliver locally, such as on-site production, events, or retail activities.

Include every activity you’ll actually invoice for, plus one or two you expect to add within 12 months. Your license has to match how you earn money. If you bill a client for something your license doesn’t list, you risk fines, trouble with your bank, and rejection by brands or the Media Council.

Yes. For UAE residents, these are two separate layers, and you need both. The business license (freelance permit/license or company) gives you the legal right to operate commercially. The Advertiser Permit from the UAE Media Council gives you the right to publish promotional content. One doesn’t replace the other.

Yes. A production company license only gives your business the right to operate. Each shoot still needs its own filming permit from the film commission of the emirate where you film.

Yes. For most media and entertainment businesses. Foreigners can own 100% in both free zones and on the mainland. The exceptions are a small number of sensitive or “strategic” activities.

No studio is needed, and a full office is only needed on the mainland. Every company needs a registered business address, but in a free zone that can be a low-cost flexi-desk. A studio is an operating choice, not a legal requirement, you can rent stages and edit suites per project.

Yes. Both a freelance permit/license and a company setup can give you UAE residency, and once you’re a resident you can sponsor your family if you meet the income and housing rules. Family residency is a separate application that depends on your income.

The total depends mainly on your structure, the number of visas, and the jurisdiction you choose, there is no fixed price. It typically ranges from AED 8,000 to AED 20,000, and takes 1-4 weeks to be fully registered and operational for most creators and small businesses.

No, company registration can be done virtually, with your identity verified by the relevant government authorities.
